Summary of Part 1
Tan and Lang were two incredibly close twin brothers. Their parents passed away early, and they moved in with the family of a Taoist master named Luu to study. The master's daughter, Luu Thi, fell in love with the elder brother. Later, Tan and Luu Thi got married. After the wedding, Lang felt sad as he received less attention from his brother. One day, the two brothers went to work far away in the fields and didn't return until late at night. Luu Thi didn't recognize Lang and ran out to embrace him tightly, just as Tan walked in, making all three very awkward.
From then on, Tan grew jealous and became colder towards his younger brother. Lang felt very angry and ashamed, so he left. He walked and walked until he reached a swift-flowing river he couldn't cross, so he sat down and cried. He cried and cried until he turned into a rock. Tan waited and waited, but when he couldn't find his brother, he also left to search. He reached the riverbank and saw the rock. Realizing he had wrongly blamed his brother, Tan also sat down and cried, then transformed into a straight-growing tree. Luu Thi couldn't find her husband and also went to the riverbank to cry, then turned into a climbing plant entwining itself around the straight-growing tree. The Taoist master and his wife, along with the villagers, searched, but now only found the rock and the two trees side by side. People passed down the story of "harmonious brothers, loyal husband and wife." From then on, betel, areca, and lime became a popular folk food, frequently present at weddings.
